clawfoot bathtubs

What goes around, comes around!  These early Victorian clawfoot bathtubs are once again back in fashion, and quite rightly so.  They are so elegant, classy, large and comfortable that almost anyone can fall in love with them and would want one in their bathroom...

However, unlike the Victorian times there are now many different choices available, not just in the shape and style of the clawfoot bathtub, but the materials used, and you can even choose which type and color of clawfoot you want on!

Clawfoot Bathtub Styles

Basically there are two main types of clawfoot bathtub:-

  • European Style:  the European clawfoot tubs tend to be either wall or floor mounted, and thus no drilling for faucets in required.  However, holes are obviously still needed for drainage and overflow.  This is largely due that they are an external feature of this design of clawfoot tub and this has the impact that the water is deeper than usual.
  • American Style: the American syle is more adaptable and has the most design types.  They do feature drilled holes for the faucets, drain and overflow.  However, the designs can range quite significantly

Choice of Designs:

  • right-sided slipper
  • left-sided slipper
  • double-sided slipper
  • roll-top
  • back-to-wall
  • free-standing
  • double-ended
  • taps in middle
  • taps at end
  • gold, silver, white or black clawfeet...

What Are Clawfoot Tubs Made of?

Back in the olden days there were only the enamel cast-iron bathtubs available.  Today, however, you have an extra choice of acrylic tubs.

Advantages / Disadvantges of Cast Iron Bathtubs:

Materials Used: cast iron, enamel

 Advantages:
  • they have the look and feel of the original clawfoot bathtubs

  • they have the authenticity of a vintage clawfoot tub
  • they have a smooth finish but with a strong textured coating

Disadvantages:

  • unfortunately they are always cold and it takes a little longer to heat the bath up
  • they are so heavy that it takes 3 grown men to carry the tub up a pair of stairs
  • you have to be diligent in the care of the enamel as it can crack, discolor and go rusty

Advantages / Disadvantges of Acrylic Bathtubs:

Materials Used: high-grade sanitary acrulics, ceramic powders, polyester resins, fibreglass

Advantages:

  • they have the look of the original clawfoot bathtubs
  • they are 40% lighter to carry / move
  • they are warm and hot water stays straight away
  • they are smooth and very easy to wipe clean and maintain
  • more design functionality

Disadvantages:

  • they aren't as close to an original than the enamel tub

How Easy is It to Install a Clawfoot Bathtub?

They aren't that easy to intall to anyone who is inexperienced with plumbing bathtubs.  This is especially so if you buy a cast-iron tub.

Therefore, is is recommended that you get the experience of a trustworthy plumber who has installed these types of bathtubs before.  Before your plumber comes to install your tub, please make sure that you have all the necessary fixtures and fittings.  Don't forget the mundane hardware items such as the drain and overflow.

When you order your clawfoot bath tub, you should have all the necessary fittings included with your order.  If you are unsure, don't be shy to ask your plumber.

Taking Good Care of Your Clawfoot Tub

Clawfoot tubs aren't any harder to maintain than any other type of bathtub.  As discussed above, enamel cast-iron tubs have the disadvantage to discolor, go rusty or even crack.  Therefore, be extra vigilent and make sure that you keep it dry in between uses and that there are no constant dripping taps, this will help extend its life.

Acrylic tubs are far easier to maintain as you basically have to wipe the bath clean with a damp cloth.  You won't get any rust or cracks.  However, still avoid dripping taps and wipe it dry after each use as to avoid rim-marks.
