So you've come to the decision that you would like to invest in a hot tub, but not only that, an indoor hot tub.  Have you seriously thought about the implications of an indoor hot tub?  Perhaps you are not exactly sure what having an indoor hot-tub spa entails.

Let's look at some brief criteria of housing such a large 'ornament' in your home and some tips on keeping your energy bills down (read this before you buy!).

Why Hot Tubs Are So Popular?

There has been a distinct increase in the number of people purchasing hot tubs for their garden or backyard. One of the main reasons of this increase within the UK is because of the television reality show 'Big Brother'.  Big Brother houses a large luxury hot tub for its contestants in the garden.  This looked kind of fun and cool, and a lot of the British public followed suit.

For America and other countries I really cannot say, although I think that Big Brother is now in many other countries doing some of the same antics.  However, we cannot sell the success of the popularity of hot tubs merely down to the Big Brother experience...

So basically hot tubs are so popular because they are a relaxing mechanism that you can enjoy all throughout the year, whether indoors or outdoors.  Not only that, you can enjoy this experience with your family or friends.

Hot tubs are:

  • relaxing
  • fun
  • different
  • sociable...

Once one person sees how much you can gain from an outdoor or indoor hot tub, then they will want to get in on the action too - and so it escalades...

Advantages / Disadvantages of Indoor Hot Tubs

Let's face it, hot tubs aren't cheap as they can cost anywhere from $2,000 up to $20,000 or more, depending on quality and accessories.  They are a large investment and so you want to use it to its full ability and as often as you can to make sure that you get your money's worth.

Below is a list of the pro's and con's of housing an indoor hot tub:

Advantages

  • The cold winter puts many people off from using their outdoor hot tub.  Therefore, an indoor hot tub is the ideal answer in cold and snowy conditions
  • You gain more privacy and convenience
  • You will be provided with extra heat in the room and in the adjoining rooms from the heat of your hot tub

Disadvantages

  • Location and size.  Hot tubs are large - have you got the room?  You may need to build an extra room to house your indoor hot tub
  • Additional ventilation.  Whichever room you choose to house your hot tub, it will require extra ventilation either in the form of additional windows or a ventilation system
  • With the additional price of ventilation (and even an additional room), the cost can be more than an outdoor hot tub

Tips on Keeping Your Engergy Bills Down with Indoor Hot Tubs

You are probably thinking that an indoor hot tub will make your energy bills go through the roof.  Well, yes they can.  However, if you choose your indoor hot tub carefully - and know how to use it to its full efficiency - then you can save a lot of money and actually just relax and enjoy it!

Here are some tips when shopping for your indoor hot tub:

Insulation:  Get a full foam closed-cell insulated hot tub.  This prevents the heat from escaping and hence, keeping your fuel bills down.

You will be surprised to learn that a hot tub without insulation normally costs in the region of $100 a month to operate.  However, by buying a fully insulated hot tub will only cost your around $25 per month.  What a saving!

So even if you have to initially pay extra for an insulated hot tub, just do the math and you can see what a whopping great saving you will have in the long-term.  Also, any respectable hot tub company should give you an energy guarantee which will state how much your indoor hot tub will cost you to operate per month - look out for this!

Heating Elements: In addition to the insulation, when shopping for a tub, try to find one with a sealed heating element.  This basically means that it will prevent any water from touching the actual element and therefore the heater will last longer and be much more efficient.

Circulation System:  It is advised that the circulation system in your indoor hot tub be left on continuously.  This not only keeps the motor from starting and stopping over and over again (huge energy-waster), it will also keep the water continuously fresh and clean so you can dive in at any time your feel like some relaxation.

Summary

I hope that we have given you a little insight into indoor hot tubs and that you are now in a better frame of mind to either go out and buy one or hold off on your purchase for the moment.

When you think about it, everything you buy has it's pro's and con's and indoor hot tubs are no exception.  If you really want one and can afford it, then go for it.  You deserve it.  Also with the additional tips on saving your energy bills on hot tubs, you will now be saving more than the man next door!!
